To facilitate navigation in the directory, individual experts pages are arranged in a structure of categories. Expertise areas, language proficiencies, departments, and others, for example, are all categories.

[edit] Top-level categories

Notice that most category designations are arranged as sub-categories of more fundamental categories. Top-level categories can be found at Category:Fundamental

[edit] Naming categories

The names of categories and pages are case-sensitive, except for the first letter, which is automatically made upper-case. Don't capitalize all words, except for proper names, e.g. we use Category:Autonomous technology, not Category:Autonomous Technology.

[edit] Categories are "nested"

Categories are nested inside other categories. For example, here is an example of the hierarchical paths for the category Math for prospective teachers:

Notice that this one category, Math for prospective teachers is included in a few different categories.

[edit] How to nest a category

Find the category, either by navigating to it, or by searching for it. Once you are viewing the category you would like to be nested under another category, click the "Edit" tab at the top of the page. Insert wikitext at the bottom of the page in the format where Category name is the name of the category you would like to create a sub-category in, ie: .

[edit] Categorizing pages

To include a page in a category, insert at the bottom of a page. For example, including will result in a page being included in the Autonomous technology category. To create an inline link to a category page (without including the linking page the page in that category, use the form :Category:Category name (with a colon before Category).

You may notice that if you wish to both link to the category page inline and include the page in that category at the same time, this choice will require including both these forms of Wikitext. To make this more convenient, you can use code that looks like this: Name of category or Name of category. If you're categorizing a page for an individual in the expertise directory, use the later form like this so that the page will appear with last name first: Name of category

[edit] Creating categories

When you want to categorize a page or another category under a category which has not been created yet, simply call it as you would any other category, using the form . When you submit the change and view the modified page, a link to the newly-created category will appear in red. Click that link to add information to that category page and assign it to a parent category. Avoid creating "orphan" categories, which do not descend from the Fundamental category.
